Szydlowiec - one of the Radziwill's townships

Aug 11, 2010 15:24

Syzdlowiec is a small township located about 20 km to the south from Radom on the way between Warsaw and Krakow. It was the property of the Polish noble Szydlowiecki family but via marriages it became closely related with Radziwills:

I heard for the first time about Szydlowiecki's about one year ago during the reburial of Radziwills in Dubingiai: together with Mikolaj the Black has been reburried his wife Elzbieta Szydlowiecka. Later I found that Radziwills married at least three Szydlowiecki family woman in various periods...  And planing my trip to Krakow I found the town of Szydlowiec on my way :)) It suggested that this town was the seat and main family property of Szydlowiecki. So I decided to visit this town also especially taking into account the fact that town isn't big but is relatively rich of monuments.

Town for the first time was mentioned in 1360 when Casimirus the Great gave the privilege for the town. In 1500s it was the sole property of Szydlowiecki family - rapidly rising noble family in the south of Poland. In 1548 Mikolaj the Black Radziwill married Elzbieta Szydlowiecka and consequently town became one more possession of the Radziwills. And still engages the status of Miasto Radziwillow.

So let me finish this short introduction and went to the town.
The first object of attraction is the church of Szydlowiec. It's constructrion started in 1401 but modern look obtained between 1493 and 1525 due to the Jakub Szydlowiecki.

Belfry near the church:

The most impressive view is from the backside (since the church is located on a small hill) but photos can't give the full impression ...

Koscuszko monument in the central square and close to the church (built in 1920):

In the middle of the square - Town hall built in 1602-1629. This Town hall belongs to the those few Town halls in Poland that were remained almost intact per centuries. The Town hall was constructed by Italian master Kasper and Albrecht Fodyga:

Better view from distance:

Behind the Town hall is Dom pod Dębiem - built in 1819 due to attempts of Anna Sapeha:

Market square of Szydlowiec: church and town hall:

Simple buildings near the Market square:

But township even has own small pedestrian street :

The former castle in Szydlowiec is several hundred meters away from the square. I very like infotables in Poland so the history of the castle you can read in this photo :))))

The view to the castle from distance:

Coming closer:

Entrance :

In the internal yard of the castle. Today the castle is used as a culture center, library, museum , etc. :

Coat - of -arms on the wall but I was unable to decode which family symbols this coat-of-arm:

The castle may need some maintenance but this castle retained many original details from XVIIth century:

And that's all Szydlowiec :))
