Berlin: Friedrichstrasse

Jun 21, 2010 13:51

Another street in the former eastern part of Berlin which underwent enormous reconstruction:

Friedrichstrasse  is one of the central commercial streets in Berlin. For more than 50 years it was part of the eastern part of the city. I don't know exactly how this street looked like in 1980s but it is very hard to believe that one of the central streets of the city was in ruins for more than 40 years. Probably it looked like typical commieblock street of eastern block. Today this street looks entirely different also.

So let's go.

But first let me begin from the one of the remaining symbols of the Honnecker era and one of the dreams of the soviet TV viewers: Friedrichstad -palast. Here was the "residence" of the ballet of GDR TV and pop concerts of GDR TV :))))

The heyday of the Friedrichstrasse was the 1920s but during later periods this street also remained as one of the most important cultural and commercial life arteries.

Of course in Friedrichstrasse you can find some remaining accents of earlier periods:

Some Polish signs in the middle of Berlin:

Admirals-palast:

But bigger part of the street is clearly composed from buildings built in 1990s and 2000. No comments only photos :))

Corner with Unter den Linden:

In the shopping center of culture goods you can even find ancient Egyptian statue. It's not a fake one. It's  from a museum !

Famous French exclusive shopping center Galleries Lafayete. In all cities that I saw their buildings they always are similar and in my opinion requires bolder architecture ... But building itself is clearly  the result of 1990s or 2000s.

Friedrichstrasse is long street and part of it (smaller one) was in the western part of the city. First buildings in the former west Berlin:

And this building at the start of western Berlin may belong to era ...
