Berlin: Treptower park

Jun 09, 2010 14:14

During rain we almost accidentally found Treptower park. This park has monument of Soviet soldiers. Of course I knew this monument but I was really impressed by it's size: for the first time I saw a monument of such size:

Memorial in the Treptower park of Berlin was built in 1947-1948. It is great and interesting memorial. I saw never before sculptures of such size. Artistic quality of the memorial is also great. It was the largest soviet memorial before 1967 when bigger memorial was erected in Volgograd and still is the second largest memorial of WWII. The only thing that disturb me is the years of construction - it means that a lot of resources were spent by the country which was still in the very difficult economic situation ....

Entrance to the park - pay attention to the words "socialist Motherland":

Near the entrance smallest sculpture of the memorial:

General view to the complex:

Two sculptures built using the marble from Hitler's Reichskanzlei:

View to the main sculpture:

And view back - this view I liked most:

A series of bas-reliefs on both sides of the main way:

On one side quotations by the "biggest genius" in German, on other side in Russian:

Other reliefs:

And do not forget who is the main ...

Now I am close to the main sculpture:

And the main sculpture. Evaluate the height looking to the size of accidental visitor ... Photo is bad but sculpture itself is very well publicized so my aim is only to show the size of it.

Inside the memorial. Some resemblance to the shrine ...
