Antwerp - the first skyscraper in Europe and commercial center

Jan 07, 2011 17:01

Let us to continue our walk along the streets of Antwerp. Today the commercial center - Meir straat. And my surprise - Boerentoeren - often called the first real skyscraper in Europe:

Going away (southern direction) from the Cathedral and the Market square soon such typical for the old town views ends:

The first sign of the starting New Town or the commercial center which mainly represents XIXth century and the first decades of XXth century is the new corpus of Hilton hotel. The new here is the relative definition ...

The heart of the commercial center is the Meir street. On Saturday this street was particularly crowded. The buildings on this streets represents probably all architectural styles that were popular in Europe from the middle of XIXth century to the middle of XXth century.

Here you can see such functionalistic office buildings:

And such:

Majority of the buildings represents XIXth century manerism:

But what we see here ?

It was one  of the biggest surprises of me in Belgium. This is Boerentoren - the first real skyscraper in Europe. Built in 1929-1932 it was the tallest building in Europe up to the 1954 when Moscow university building surpassed it. Till 1967 it maintained the title of the tallest building in Belgium but now it is only 18th in a row in Belgium. What a progress has been achieved :)))

Going further along Meir street:

Typical view in the street:

Modernism is born:))

Concert hall:

At the end of the street the architecture of the buildings achieves melting point. This is fiesta of the "golden age of capitalism" and the "triumph of positivism":)))

Monument at the end of the street:

Leaving the Meir street you could immediately find Antwerp opera:

But about the sidestreets of Antwerp later :)))
