Old town of Antwerp - my view

Dec 21, 2010 16:25

In the pre-Christmas period I and I hope that you also need something beautiful. So for today is my view to the old town of Antwerp :)))

Near the restored fort which detail I will show in the next photo you need to turn to the left:

And there you will find the very center of Antwerp old town. E.g. you may do short walk on this short street:

We came using this street:

The Anwerp town hall is the first bigger building we found:

At the left corner of the town hall we found the sculpture. The record on the sculpture forced me again to think about the origins of the slogan "Arbeit macht frei":

There are many different flags on the town hall. It seems that such tradition is popular in Belgium since we saw the flags of different countries in many places in this country. E.g. in Lithuania it is difficult to find flags of other countries:

Near the town hall we witnessed the wedding ceremony: bride, groom and I guess the witness of the ceremony - not so small their daughter:

The buildings near the square - the remembrance from the Golden Age of Low Countries:

Towns in the modern Belgium had very interesting history: first among towns rose up Ghent, then Bruegge, and after Bruegge came the time for Antwerp. It was the years 1500s-1600s. Guildhouses are the remains from this period. Details:

Going further:

Details:

Nearby is also one of the main monuments in Antwerp - Our Lady Cathedral. It was built between 1352 and 1520 but was unfinished - it lacks second tower:

Entrance to the cathedral:

Antwerp was the town of Petro Paulo Rubens. The most famous resident left many paintings in the cathedral. But unfortunately cathedral is open for the attendance only before 13.00 and we arrived to the cathedral at 13.15. So here only my photo from the entrance:

At the streets of the old town:

One another square is situated going southern direction. In the center of this square you can see monument to most famous Antwerp resident:

Rubens and cathedral - two symbols of this city:

On the other corner of the square you can find older part of Hilton hotel. Here the old town ends and looking further you can see KBC tower - the first skyscraper in Europe. But here we will return back in the next report:

But for now let's go back to the old town using one of the numerous backstreets:

In one of such houses Rubens lived:

In principle Antwerp differs significantly from Brussels: this town is exclusively Flemish speaking and here people are "whiter" than in the capital.

Very typical corners of the old town:

And for no let's make break
