So I want you all to meet Pandora Shadow Baby!
A couple of weeks after the loss of SIlver Moon Baby. I began the search for a new puppy. I knew Maharhet needed a new companion, she had pushed herself so far into depression, she was sick. So was I. I still am, I will always be. But, I knew to preserve a small bit of sanity, we needed this. So...by accident, I stumbled upon an ad for a cocker spaniel. The picture was dated 7/03 though. My heart dropped...because the dog looked like my Baby. And her name? Baby. I'm not kidding. So, hoping for the best, but expecting the worst...I called the lady...she still had the dog, the picture had been taken in '03, but she had just put the ad up after Christmas. So, we drove 3 hours to go meet Baby, on a farm, where she was kept outdoors, and used as a bitch. The lady wasn't sure how many litters poor Baby had had in 6 years of her life...ranged from 6 to 12 every time she told the story. She had her spayed in November, and felt the dog was useless to her now that she was retired from whelping.
Fine with me! I don't think she's useless! So the lady proceeds to tell me she's due for her Frontline, but is up to date on shots etc. Gives me her paperwork and tags, sure enough up to date on shots, spayed, and a 2 page AKC pedigree certificate. Sadly her tail is docked. :( Her name was Adams' Irresistible Baby Girl. I need to get in touch with the AKC and change it to Hayes' Pandora Shadow Baby. Either way...
Get her home...and begin the grooming process asap, as she has spent 6 years outdoors, and the lady decided to bathe her in human shampoo, so she stunk...badly.
4 and a half hours later, after shaving her, and finding fleas so gorged on her blood they didn't even move at the push of the clippers through her fur, 3 and a half of those hours spent leaning in the shower with her, picking fleas off her and lathering her up in flea shampoo and brushing through with a flea comb, cleaning the wads of gunk out of her ears, and a half hour under a blow dryer and a dose of K9 Advantix, she was a whole new dog. I must have found over 200 fleas just feasting away on her. She had bites that she had itched so badly they were bleeding and scabby. She spent a week getting 2 doses of Benadryl a day so she could stop itching them so they would heal.
She is beautiful, and sweet. Oddly, she has several of Baby's attributes. She loves to roll on the floor, she is a huuuuge cuddle slut, especially with me, and doesn't give out the sugars easily, well except to me. :)
She doesn't replace Baby by any stretch of the imagination, it was all too odd that she just happened upon me at the right time, with the same name, very similar features, she even has Baby's fine fur, not typical to the Cocker Spaniel breed.
She does however, make Maharhet and I very happy. Bathory, after spending a week under the bed, realized if the dog was staying, she might as well get used to it, they now cuddle up to sleep at night.
