Wow, they finally have that here in the United States? It's been common in Japan, I even used it myself when I was there and had a car.

I have the feeling that outpatient surgery places really go overboard on the whole "safety" thing. I've even been told that I'm not allowed to go home by cab. When my ex needed a colonoscopy, I ended up being the one to drive him home, which had to get me some extra points in the "amicable divorce" competition. ;-)

I don't know why Drivers Incorporated would be safer than a cab. But at least they apparently are accepted, which is good to know.

my best guess is that as it's your own car they are assumed not to be.

According to some of what I was reading in the Post article, they also do have a lot of repeat customers and build a bit of relationship.

Anesthesia "optional"? starfyrone March 26 2012, 02:52:15 UTC
Re: Anesthesia "optional"? vvalkyri March 26 2012, 04:06:57 UTC
actually, sedation for colonoscopies is also optional, though one has to fight for not-sedated in the US. Look at badmagic's Quote of the Weekend from a few week's back.

If you look around at various sites you can find accounts from people who managed to get a goahead for colonoscopies without sedation in this country. They've tended to be fine with it; it's the people for whom sedation or anesthesia failed who tend to be Not Happy Campers.

the news is more about insurance companies balking re anesthetist-supervised anesthesia (required for propofol, b/c it's too easy to kill you with it; propofol has less of an anesthetic hangover, which is why it's got the demand) as opposed to "is any anesthesia or even sedation required?"

edit:
Interesting - when I was using bing the other day I didn't find this article, but today on google, a 2009 article: Study supports use of no-sedation colonoscopy
