Pomegranate!

Once upon a time, I learned that many people I knew had not encountered whole artichokes in their foodstuffs.

As it turns out, this seems to also be the case with pomegranates. I've got a pomegranate here at work today; last time I went through one I couldn't manage to give any of it away, although my favorite comment was from one guy who blamed ( Read more... )

Alton Brown recommends peeling poms under water.

An artichoke can be a whole meal for me, my Dad makes them boiled with oil and vinegar. :) I haven't had a whole POM in many years. I find most fruit stores don't stock them. Asian supermarkets?

One guy who stopped by my desk says they're easy to find in Asian stores, yes. But I see them in Safeway this time of year, too.

They're very seasonal.
This year is the longest I've seen them in stores.

That may be changing. I read some a while back that California growers were making a big investment in pom groves, but it would take several years for them to be fully productive.

The widespread appearance of pom juice a few years ago was supposedly a result of the pilot programs... this years longer season may be the start of the CA groves coming online.

I like the flavor of the juice, but not so much swallowing the seed. At t-giving I enjoyed a pom/cranberry relish with whole pom seeds by picking out the seeds, sucking the juice off, then stacking the actual seeds in a discreet pile on my plate. Much teasing resulted. :-D

I too suck pulp and spit seeds.

Sounds like you have geeky coworkers. Is it fun to work there?

Sadly, they're not very geeky at all. I brought buckeyballs to the yankee gift swap and they languished, untouched.

I am amused that the tags are "pomegranate, sick".

Pomegranates are great fun, though quite messy. I've found it hard to get good ones at the stores, though.
