There they stood, just the two of them, side by side like they always had. Light reflected off their bright porcelain skin, making their colors more brilliant than they were before. They had the same structure, one handle to the side, and the same pattern, horizontal stripes, though in their own respective red and blue hues.
A gloved hand reached out and plucked the blue mug from its rest. Prince of Altea, Marth Lowell, brought the cup over to the kitchen sink and ran it under warm water. Putting it down on the counter, the prince went through the pantry for his favorite tea leaves. Instead of the usual chrysanthemum (apparently they were out), a lame bag of Tetley brand tea was dunked into the mug, then filled with boiling water which had been prepared before hand.
Marth brought out a plate of strawberry wafers, quietly munching on them as he waited for his beverage to cool. His eyes landed back on the cupboard where the utensils were kept. The red cup, partner to his own, sat there by itself, a little duller than it was moments ago. He put down the wafer in his hand, smiling lightly as memories flooded him.
He remembered it was Christmas. Everyone was exchanging gifts and the mugs were one of them. Their friend Zelda (not the current one, this one had retired with the other Link and his younger counterpart) had given the two swordsmen the wrapped box and told them to open it together. Her face flushed in embarrassment when she explained how she saw the set at the store and immediately thought of them. Roy chuckled merrily and they both thanked her gratefully.
The prince flinched, pulling his fingers away from the burning mug. He dragged the cup towards himself by the handle, which was safe from the scalding heat. He let out a breath of air over the dark liquid, watching as the steam swirled franticly and the tea pooled ripples. Gently he took a cautious sip, letting the bitter drink flood his taste buds. It drowned out the sugary flavor of the strawberry wafer and warmed his heart.
That reminded Marth of the time Roy had fixed him a cup of hot cocoa. The taste of milk chocolate still branded in his memory. A special blend Roy would only make once in a life time, sweet, tangy and full of flavor. It was somehow the best cup of hot coca he had ever sampled. The prince then declared his friend as the chocolate master, which had the general in fits of laughter.
But it did have some sort of truth in it. Roy really like chocolate, despite the sayings about males and sweets. It was Valentines Day, if he remembered correctly, when all the girls would give out chocolate to the people they care for or admired. Marth had received a ton of homemade sweets that would have satisfied a certain pink puffball. Roy had only half as much, much to his disappointment. Of course, this was easily compromised by splitting Marth's share. (He was happy enough to give away the entire stock, but Roy declined, muttering things about pride.)
A month later, Marth remembered to make some chocolates for his friends. That ended in failure, seeing as Marth was a prince and never really worked in the kitchen before. He remembered the general's face when he presented the supposed chocolate to him. A mix of horror and hesitation dotted his features, but he took a big bite out of it anyway. A while later, Roy collapsed and was sent to the medical center. Marth was almost in tears when he thought he might have killed his best friend. Roy did regain conscious. With a weak smile upon his lips, he told his friend that he made great chocolate. The prince actually cried that time.
To be honest, even though Roy liked chocolate, Marth always remembered him to be a coffee drinker. While he personally preferred tea, his friend preferred the other source of caffeine to start his day, and it had always been like that. Link (again, the old one that left after Melee) thought it would have been funny if they switched beverages. That only resulted in a very cranky Roy and a displeased Marth.
Taking another strawberry cream wafer between his fingers, Marth munched down on it. It had gotten a little stale due to the long time exposure to air, but it was still edible.
Roy had complained about that, how a short amount of time can turn wafers into dry pieces of paper. It was an exaggeration but he told the Lowell that it felt like he was being timed to eat them all. The two then got into a small argument about a different brand of cookies, then it led to deciding the flavors of the Garden wafers, in which the two had agreed that peanut flavor was superior. It was a random thought, but it was a fond memory in his mind
A tap on his shoulder snapped Marth from his thoughts. Jigglypuff had entered the kitchen and stood on the table, eyeing the wafers hungrily. He offered the plate to the balloon Pokemon and it stuffed a few in its mouth before hovering way. Marth sighed.
They were all afraid when they were informed about the cut backs for the next game. Jigglypuff was crying heavily and characters like Mr. Game and Watch and Pichu were fearing for the worst. Many looked at Roy, as he was one most likely chosen to leave. The general didn't seem to be affected by the gossip though. Marth remembered how he had waved it off because he didn't worry about his position. But even while the general was rather calm, Marth worried, a lot.
Marth felt his eyes stinging, blinking away any wetness that might have formed. He blamed in on the mug of tea for emanating steam, though when he checked the cup, it was at a moderate temperature and had long lost its piping mist. He took a long gulp, hoping maybe it would wash down that lump in his throat.
It wasn't fair, Marth thought. The majority of his friends left him, either because they weren't "good enough" or because they would be replaced by a newer counterpart. Link, Zelda, Ganondorf and Young Link made way for the next generation. Pichu, Dr. Mario and Roy had to leave, their fighting styles were too similar and they barely had any positive statistics in their abilities. Mewtwo was to be replaced by a fighting/steel type, which angered the psychic type pokemon. Somehow Falco stayed and Jigglypuff and Mr. Game and Watch were safe. But Roy just shrugged it off and told everyone he would be looking forward to seeing his home again. The general was earned a slap on the face by an upset Marth, who then ran off, embarrassed by his rashness.
The next few events were a little blurry, but Marth remembered collapsing on his bed and laying there until Roy followed after. They argued over the way he had reacted and something else that the prince can't recall. One conversation directed to another, and then Roy somehow ended up on his bed, above him, in a straddle. The flurry of emotions that bounced against his chest at that time must have impaired his judgement because he remembered grabbing Roy by the shoulders, pulling him down and crashing their lips together.
Marth tilted his mug over his mouth but realized it was pretty empty. The plate of wafers now only held crumbs. The prince brought his cup over to the kitchen sink to rinse it out. He put it back in the cupboard where it originally was. His gloved hand trailed over to the striped red mug that belonged to Roy. A thin film of dust coated the porcelain due to lack of use. Marth picked up the unused cup and ran it over water, then dried it with a cloth. He held it to the window where the rays of sun still entered through the glass.
Before he left, Roy had told him that he was leaving his cup here. Marth could still see the forlorn smile on the other's lips. You can't separate them, they belong together, the general had said. The prince nodded in agreement, but only when the shorter boy had pulled him down into a kiss did he realize what he meant.
Marth brought the red mug to his lips. Kissing the rim of the cup, he set the mug back. After one last glance at the porcelain pair, the prince left with a smile.

Damn this was shorter than I expected it to be. And once again, I tried my best not to add any dialouge. The style might have changed in the last few chunks because I was also writing something else (>_>) when I wasn't done with this. I hope it wasn't so hard to read what was in the past and what was happening in the present...
Just for the sake of amusement, I was inspired by Katie's comment in her
Peecaf comic. She said Marth and Roy had matching mugs (IT'S ADORABLE. ) ...You know, sometimes I wonder about that girl...
