He's still injured, exhausted physically and mentally, and is still coming to grips with what had happened, wrestling with questions he can't know the answers to. He's running on automatic for now, so his voice will come off that way. The view in the portrait reflects a lot of this, and though most of the blood has been cleaned off of him by now, there may still be residual stains there for now...]
