The spoilers did a lot of exaggeration this week. I'm actually happier that that's the case, though.
Now having seen it, this is my current theory.
The theory.
The dialogue between Love and Shunsui = Love was Shunsui's VC before Lisa. He was probably promoted from 8th VC to Captain of the 7th some time after the Quincy massacre and before the Pendulum.
My reasons.
The spoilers suggested Love was all angry at Shunsui, but I didn't read it that way at all. Also I was tired and didn't look clearly enough at the script (just saw 'drunk' and assumed, but its cleverer than that.).
Love bowed. Shunsui said "Buji de nani yori".
--> First point of linguistic note here. There are lots of things Shunsui could've said in response to Love's bow and so on. He could've said, "Nandemo nai" (it's nothing), or he could easily have teased Love about being so suddenly formal. (Obviously this isn't something he finds funny, but even so, it struck me about his choice of words.)
Buji de nani yori.
Buji de = being safe, being without injury/issue.
Nani yori = above everything, above something.
As a phrase it means "So long as you're okay, that's the most important thing."
It's the kind of dialogue that a VC and Captain might share after a Captain has entered a scene and fixed a VC's faux pas. Those are the roles I see them slipping into. Love is somewhat formal to Shunsui. Somewhat, but not completely. His "desu" becomes 'su" by the time he comments on entering other people's fights and it being totally lacking in style.
This is the same way Kaien speaks to Ukitake, and also noticeable between other subordinate officers speaking to their superiors. But Love in the Pendulum was on equal ranking with Shunsui. It could be put down to the Senior Captain thing - but somehow it doesn't have that feel.
And then the comment about "being drunk on style and throwing away a victory is something for underlings". I still don't really like Shunsui using that word, so he's obviously using it for particular emphasis (in my mind anyhow). Subordinate would be far friendlier. Junior, etc. But no, this one is significantly 'underling'. As though this is a conversation that's been had before, and it's one that Shunsui feels the need to regurgitate at this particular moment. It's almost a sensei to student lesson recap - that's how it seems to me.
The fact that Love commented on Shunsui interfering in a battle and then Shunsui responding with those comments about style and how a Captain can't be so careless - suggests again that Shunsui's stepped in to clear up Love's mess. Shunsui's words are slightly chiding - the way he spoke to Nanao about killing Chad only without the flirtatious undertone to make it more lighthearted. It's slightly pointed - Love WAS a Captain, after all.
Someone pointed out to me too that Shunsui balanced out Hisagi's huge amount of fail in battle situations with his slick analysis of fighting.
"You can't be the good kid. Whether you're owed or you're the one owing, in the moment the battle begins, both of you are wrong."
Love's expression is...it's not sullen, it's not angry. It's as though he's hearing something that he's heard before...and reabsorbing it in a new context.
And Rose is not involved in this at all. It's entirely Shunsui and Love. Which is interesting
