Fish balls would be good. But I think you can use any mild flavored meat, like chicken for example. Or just leave it meatless. The unami flavor comes from the fish sauce. I think the shrimp makes it more complex, but you can do without.

I ended up making the Sopa de Calabaza today. It was a bit thin, even though I added yoghurt (2 cups milk plus quarter cup yoghurt). I am thinking of boiling some pasta and adding it into the soup to make it more filling. As it is, I don't think it's going to last until tuesday.
