There is this wonderful invention called caller ID. Where if it says "Out of Area" or if it is the name of a buisness that you don't recognize, DON'T ANSWER THE PHONE.

So then, one of your relatives or friends has an emergency, and the people they're with only know your phone number... they call you, and you don't answer the phone. Or, someone stops at a business and uses their phone to try to get ahold of you.

There's currently no system in place to not get unsolicited calls without losing the calls you need to get.

Not exactly. Back in 1999 I saw a small device in a mail-order catalog for about $20. This device would be wired between the phone line and the phone itself. When a call comes in, it would prompt the caller for a PIN. Entry of a correct PIN would cause the device to ring the phone.

Wow, talk about replying to a dead thread :) Four years is kind of amazing.

I know! I didn't remember it at all.

Yes, and if the relative or friend is incapacitated, you have the same problem.

wait for the answering machine to kick in. Telemarketers usually just hang up. Real people leave messages. Also check the number at http://800notes.com. It's a database of unwanted callers. You might find your caller there.

...and you'll just call them back at the payphone, I suppose. You seriously don't see that in an emergency, you want to pick up the phone?

But so what?

You want to pick up the phone, you pick up the phone. You don't want to pick up the phone you don't pick up the phone. It's your phone--you paid for the phone service--do what you want with it.

And if the friend calling you dies, you'll never forgive yourself for not picking up.

Bouncybanana, on , if your friends are so disrespectful that they talk on the phone with other people while hanging out with you or get mad if you don't pick up the phone.

800notes is a very poor attempt to duplicate another website which has been around for a longer time, lists far more phone numbers and many more entries per number from people who received unwanted calls.

Save your time and skip 800notes. Go to http://whocalled.us instead. No affiliation with the site or its creator, just an often satisfied user.

I would like to say that 800notes.com is a phone volume measuring site. They ALWAYS delete information that is helpful. The person behind this site is NOT who they claim. Word to the wise AVOID posting at all cost.

I agree strongly. I prefer Phone Spam Filter: http://www.phonespamfilter.com

The person pages me, leaves their number, but when I call them, they won't answer the phone because they don't recognize the number displayed by the Caller ID.
