Some people say that fate is the one who brings two people together. But for Eunhyuk and Donghae, it’s a simple cup of coffee.
Like every other morning, Eunhyuk wakes up at 7:30 AM, yawning and rubbing his eyes while turning the switch off of his still-ringing monkey alarm clock. He checks his cellphone for any missed calls or messages and stares warily at its screen. Opening his mouth for another yawn, he slumps back sleepily onto his bouncy mattress and thinks, “just another 2 minutes will do.”
Bad mistake.
Too tired from yesterday’s huge pile of paperwork, Eunhyuk wakes up from his “nap” 20 minutes later, his eyes stretched wide and springing out from his bed and into the bathroom, swearing to himself along the way.
Work starts at 8:15, and it takes him around 15 minutes for him to walk from his house to work.
Fired up by adrenaline, he jumps around in attempt to wear his long pants but trips over his clumsy self. Muttering another string of curses, he finally puts them on and swiftly buckles his belt. Flinging his smooth suit jacket over his shoulders, he adjusts his flashy tie coolly before grabbing his suitcase and dashing out of the door.
Just as Eunhyuk locks the door to his apartment, his stomach grumbles, protesting loudly. He grimaces and turns to face the elevator. He wouldn’t be having breakfast today. Waiting for the elevator to arrive seems like a millennia. When the metal doors slide open, he dives in and pushes the buttons wildly. As the elevator takes him down 10 floors painstakingly slow, he checks his watch.
7:57.
If he is quick, he still has time to dash over to the coffee shop. He wouldn’t survive a morning without a steaming cup of café latte. A short ding and the doors slide open, Eunhyuk sprinting as fast as he can onto the street.
At least the coffee shop is in the same direction as his work place. Dodging other busy people rushing to their jobs, Eunhyuk occasionally bumps into someone and mumbles a few apologies here and there before continuing his way. He finally spots the colorfully decorated coffee shop over many moving heads and pushes his way through the buzzing crowd to its entrance. Gasping for breath, he swings the door open, and an amazing aroma of muffins, coffee, and bread greets him. He takes another look at his watch.
8:04.
He waits in line impatiently, tapping his foot and stealing nervous glances at his watch. His turn comes and he orders a large café latte like every other morning. He fumbles around in his bag for his wallet and takes a few bills out, but he realizes he still lacks 75 cents. Placing his folders, pens, and mittens from his bag onto the counter, he gropes around in his suit pockets and in his suitcase for any change. Frustrated at his bad day, he glimpses at the clock on the wall.
8:09.
“Damn it,” he moans, chewing his lip while searching frantically in every possible place that might have some spare change. He is going to be late if he waits a little longer. Eunhyuk gives up.
“I have to go,” he tells the shop worker, stuffing all of his things back in the bag. “Just cancel my order please, thank you and sorry!” He scrambles toward the exit, trying to not drop anything he has in his hands. Throwing the rest of the stuff he is holding back in his bag, he runs blindly to his work place, his lungs and legs burning from over exertion.
He finally reaches his destination and plops miserably down into his cubicle. Groaning and running his hands through his hair, he slaps his own cheeks and lifts his wrist up.
8:15.
“Oh, thank god,” he breathes slowly, recovering himself and chuckling a little. He reaches for his bag, taking out his papers and necessities for work. He freezes, and searches blindly with his hand (literally) in his bag for his wallet.
A loud stream of profanities coming from Eunhyuk’s cubicle startles his colleagues, waking a few up from their sleep. He nods sheepishly in apology and hides his face in his hands. He must have lost his wallet in the coffee shop. Now he has no wallet, no coffee for the morning, and is extremely worn out from all the running.
Mentally kicking himself for sleeping in, he miserably starts his computer and waits for it to start while listening to the soft whirring of the computer. This day just couldn’t get any worse.
A knock resounds through the room. Heads turn to see a boy at the door, wearing a bright uniform and carrying a small bag.
“Umm…..Lee Hyukjae?”
The boy reads off a small card and peers expectantly around the room.
“Yes?” Eunhyuk responds grumpily, wondering who he is.
The boy walks slowly and carefully to Eunhyuk’s cubicle. His face lights up when he sees Eunhyuk. He is probably the same age as I am, Eunhyuk thinks.
“Here’s your wallet…. I think you dropped it….and your coffee…… a latte wasn’t it?” The boy rambles on all-too-cheerfully while placing the bag on the table. “I saw you rushing and was thinking you’d like it if you got your wallet back along with your coffee since I know you come everyday an-“
“Alright, alright,” Eunhyuk grumbles, taking the bag from the boy. “Can’t you sense the atmosphere of this place?”
“No, why?” The boy continues, completely ignoring the stares coming from a few bothered workers, “Anyways, I told my boss I’d pay for you first since you seemed like you didn’t have enough money.”
A wave of gratitude washes over Eunhyuk, and he takes the cup of coffee out from the bag gingerly. He beams childishly as he wraps his hands around the hot beverage, inhaling its addictive fragrance and sighing in content. The boy grins.
“What’s your name?” Eunhyuk asks as he takes a sip of the coffee he has yearned for the entire morning.
“Donghae. Lee Donghae,” the boy says, “but you can call me Hae or Fishy. Whatever you like.”
Eunhyuk raises his eyebrows before bursting out in laughter, almost choking on his coffee.
Donghae pouts, his eyebrows furrowed and hands at his hips. “What?”
Eunhyuk stares at the boy for a moment, not believing how cute and childish he is. Definitely a chatter box, but absolutely adorable. Eunhyuk feels much happier after meeting Donghae despite everything that happened this morning. He laughs and ruffles Donghae’s hair.
“How come I’ve never seen you at the shop before?”
“Oh, I usually help at the back,” Donghae answers, swinging the bag around absentmindly.
“Then how do you know that I go there everyday?”
Donghae pauses and his cheeks turn pink. “I-uh-um-cause you know-um--- my friends tell me about it. Yeah.” He nods as if he is reassuring himself.
“How do you know what I look like then?”
“I-uhhh--- NO MORE QUESTIONS!! I’m going back to work!” Donghae squeals before making his way out of the door. “See you!”
Eunhyuk laughs. “Yeah, tomorrow!” He responds.
Donghae blushes once more before disappearing from the room. Eunhyuk smiles to himself before taking another sip from his cup. He would have another reason to visit the shop every day from now on.
