Just a normal day...
I know I'm supposed to feel better when I see these guys. But they are more scary to me than the protesters.
I tried to explain the protests and the riots to my children who are worried when I am sent home from work to avoid the violence. Frankly, I'm more afraid of being unemployed in unsympathetic and unhelpful America than I am of getting hit by a brick.
I read about a journalist beaten up by a mob. I read about a journalist beaten up by a cop. I received concerned e-mails from higher-ups. I received texts all night telling people still at work to shelter in place. I heard people cheer when we were told to go home early with paid administrative leave.
Peaceful protest, voting, calls for change...nothing seems to work. I read
this article and wonder if it ever will.
Nonviolence is compliance. So sayeth Ta-Nehisi Coates over at the Atlantic. It's an idea that seems wrong, then right, then...I don't know.
"What does the candle represent?”
“Life.”
“Whose life?”
“All life, every life."

"The flame also reminds us that life is precious, as each flame is unique. When it goes out, it’s gone forever. And there will never be another quite like it."
The excessive concern over property damage and looting is strange to me. It reminds me of the aftermath of Katrina. People are more important than property. Always. I do not approve of or condone the riots. But I think I understand them.
