In which I drone on about my writing…

First, the plan for this series was that I would write three angst-ridden short stories which featured Orlando as the main character. Each would feature a song by the band Ours, and would have Orlando showcasing an emotion or a characterization that is out of canon. Also, each would have an unhappy ending. The stories are standalone, each with a different pairing.

Miseryhead was the first attempt. It was a Sean/Orlando pairing that was meant to show Orlando as a little immature, and to create the possibility in the reader’s mind that he might commit suicide. It was my first full-length fic, and there are some things I like about it, but I crapped out on the unhappy ending part. I actually wrote an even happier ending to it than what I ended up with, but thankfully my beta talked me out of it.

The middle story was Medication. It was the easiest to write, practically wrote itself, and introduced me to what I’ve found to be *my* pairing - Elijah/Orlando. Elijah is so easy for me to write, his character always - in any story I’ve written him in- seems so open, so clear, so honest for me. I can see what he’s feeling, what he’s thinking, how he wants to react, and how he actually does react. [Just to be clear here, I mean the character, not Elijah himself. I’ve not gone that far ‘round the bend.] I got my unhappy ending down, and was overall quite pleased with the story.

Which brings us to the final installment. Meet Me in the Tower. The one that’s taken me a year and a half to finish. *sigh* Orlando is angry. I chose to pair him with Viggo, which was the perfect pairing for what I had in mind, but omfg can I not write Viggo. I wrote basically 3 scenes that I really liked: Orlando interacting with Liv, Orlando’s fightsex scene, and the ending. Also, I liked the basic plot of unrequited love. The rest of it, eh. I sent it through to be beta’d, and shrinetolust told me, rightly so, that it needed more to connect the story. I futzed with it for a couple of months. I put it away, wrote other things, didn’t touch it for six months. Took it out, had eeeevil_genius read through it for glaring inconsistencies, and then put some finishing touches on it. I didn’t send it back to beta, not because I think it didn’t need it, but because I honestly can’t deal with this story any more. I needed it to be done, and to go away. The only reason I haven’t given up on it ages ago, and not completed it? I think it may be the best sex scene I’ve ever written.
