Your help is needed

Oct 31, 2010 15:35

It's a little earlier than I usually post these types of links, but it has been quite a year.

Tomorrow is already November, and as we near the end of the year (and my goodness, it's coming fast!), please think about sharing some of your riches with others, if you are able. There are so many needs out there.

Cholera Outbreak in Haiti
It really wasn't as though Haiti needed any additional challenges. There are years (if not decades) of reconstruction to accomplish and now this. Some groups that are responding:
Project HOPE
Oxfam
Mercy Corps
Partners in Health

Multiple natural disasters in Indonesia
The situation in Indonesia is still somewhat chaotic, but aid is beginning to move.
UNICEF
Church World Service

Recovery from the Floods in Pakistan
This is another area where there are years and probably decades of recovery and reconstruction needed.
Doctors without Borders
United Nations World Food Programme
Save the Children

Of course, many of the organizations working in Haiti are also working in Indonesia, Pakistan and many other areas in dire need. I will say that I am personally a supporter of both Oxfam and Mercy Corps because of their focus on building local capacity, not just swooping and doing "to" or "for."

The ongoing impacts of the recession in your community
Feeding America is a national hunger relief organization. You can also find a link to your local food pantry on their site. Food insecurity continues to be a huge issue in nearly every community in the country.

Your local community foundation. There are foundations set up that serve most communities in the US with a very local focus to their giving. Like United Ways, these community foundations both raise money and give it out. They are great resources in your local communities.

Local youth-serving organizations. In these times, organizations like Girls, Inc, Boys & Girls Clubs, and local YMCAs are critical community partners. These affiliate organizations will vary in their quality and services from city to city, but taken collectively, they are tutoring 100s of thousands of kids, offering safe spaces for kids to be after school, and providing leadership development. And they all need more money than ever, as most provide their programming free of charge (or at very minimal fees) and there is more demand than ever for their services.

Your local library. Libraries have become critical community hubs in these times; people use them for job searches, to read, and to learn. But, because they are dependent on public funding (which is diminishing), and some are already closing. Help kids and adults continue to have access to books and more.

As always, I invite you to add your favorite charities in the comments. I will leave this unlocked to facilitate linking, should you so desire.

Thank you for all you do for your families and communities. Happy Halloween.
