I know it needs editing...but it was a free write--there's definitely a thought process and style change :P
Sleepless Night
The second hand rings in my ears
and I realize the echo is echoing my fears.
As I toss and turn,
I count the sheep
Because tonight I just can't sleep.
Eyes wide open; mind wide awake
and yet all I can think of is
Steak.
Or even more: What's at Stake?
And I wonder, will it be my turn to take
the wake and make the rhyming
STOP.
Because a rhyme is a pattern with occasional breaks
and only too often does it recreate
The vicious cycle that is today
For: today was yesterday's tomorrow.
Now, I bring no sorrow,
But cannot afford to hope.
For: tomorrow is an hour away
And so i stray from day. today I
just trying to find my way
Or,
A way...
To go, to show, to: Hold on.
"If I can do it, you can do it,"
Is what they say,
But how many have the chance to play?
Now, some might pray
But it just comes down to the ability to pay.
If we are a product of our environment,
then who is demanding It?
Who profits when we lose?
And what is to gain from the loss
Of Self...
Hour selves.
We become robots
Without thoughts--without dreams, without hopes.
We are taught to defeat and be defeated;
To cheat and be cheated
And from these lessons we are at fault,
Thus Fault is all we are.
Now, the question therein lies:
Who are we? and Who can we be?
are we allowed to leave
and be freed?
Can we free out minds and leave behind the
Shackles that keep us blind?
And when we combine
That power--that Strength
That Indestruction,
How can we not function
in society that integrates corruption with aggression,
that perpetruates segregation
amongst its own?
So let's band together
and stand forever
Because,
I rather fight to stay off my knees
finding Community
That They've tried to squeeze and sneeze away
like a disease that brings
Dissonant ease to the pleas
Gone unheard.
If we give a little we can gain a lot
and from that spot--
that moment,
That point at which we are allowed to grow
we will begin to know
And become aware.
And then...
Be able to bear the hardship that is.
