Election Day 09! This is actually the first time I got to vote in an actual voting booth--the last time, I had to rush to the post office to overnight my belated absentee ballot. When I was little, there was a whole ritual attached to voting. Mom and Dad would get up early on election day to vote, and sometimes I'd go with them. Then we'd all go for tacos and gossip at El Mirador, where you could get a pretty decent idea of how the local precincts would go. But you don't get to press the big red button when you're tiny. Yes, there really was a big red button. Maybe it's all those years of sci-fi--there is so much satisfaction in pressing a big red button.
The Houston Press actually published a cover story bemoaning the lack of drama in this race. It has been very quiet--and we're looking at a ridiculously low turnout. Peter Brown recently ventured forth with a couple of attack ads, and Annise Parker returned fire with accusations of flakiness and bailing on votes.
I voted for Annise Parker, though it certainly wouldn't be the end of the world if Gene Locke won. I also took the liberty of placing a five dollar bet on a Parker/Brown run-off, though at this point it looks like I'm losing five dollars.
The other results I'll be stalking are those for Prop One in Maine, of course. Fingers crossed, eyes closed.
