A few years ago I read Shelley's Jackson's The Melancholy of Anatomy, a lush and visceral story collection with an overarching theme of the human body. I read a lot, but this one has stayed with me long after, and even left a little yellow Post-It note in the back of my brain saying simply, "Find MORE from her."
As luck would have it, the latest issue of BUST arrived in the mail complete with a short review of Jackson's latest novel, Half Life. That was enough to jog my memory. I ran to my beloveds (Google and Wikipedia) for more. I learned about
Patchwork Girl, Jackson's work of electronic literature. I found her homepage,
Ineradicable Stain.
And then I discovered
Skin: A Mortal Work of Art. It's a 2,095 word story - tattooed on volunteers around the world. There's even an LJ community dedicated to it:
mortalworkofart.
Seriously.
I knew there was a reason I got out of bed this morning.
