Alice heard her dad pass her door at ten at night. He had to go to work, which was unfortunate seeing as how he’d gotten little sleep the past few days. Alice sat up in bed, her hair tussled from trying to get to sleep. She felt sick but her mom told her that it was natural so she ignored it for the time being. She thought about herself. She hadn’t been to school in a month and a half (mostly because she’d been able to convince her parents to let her stay home, and a little because they felt bad for her) and she really didn’t want to go back. Home school wasn’t an option, running away would be stupid, and her parents kept telling her that sooner or later she’d have to go back and face the fucking music.

It wasn’t her fault. Really, she hadn’t wanted to have sex with Darrell, but he was so...convincing and hot. She needed to tell him she was pregnant. She reached over to her bag lying tossed aside on the floor and rummaged through it until she found her phone, pressing the speed dial she had for Darrell and waited.

“Yup?” answered Darrell, sounding distracted. Alice leaned back on her bed, the back of her head hitting the wall.

“It’s me.”

“Hey, babe. Haven’t seen you in a while.”

“Yeah, I’ve been sick.”

“Well, stay away from me until you get better alright?” she head him chuckle on the other end, and didn’t know whether to take his statement as a get-well-soon or an insult.

“I’m not contagious,” said Alice, smiling without helping herself. “I have to talk to you.”

“We are talking.”

“Yeah, but...” Alice hesitated and took a breath, collecting herself. “I just, wanted to tell you I love you.”

“Yeah, about that,” she heard Darrell shift on the other end and someone else with him chuckle. “Look, you’re way to young to know what love is.”

“You’re a year older than me-”

“Babe, look. I care about you, but I’m really not feelin’ it.”

“What?” Alice frowned and pulled her phone away from her ear, staring at it for a moment and replacing it as Darrell started talking again.

“I mean, we’ve been going out for awhile, right?”

“Yeah....”

“Maybe we should give it a break. Put ‘us’ on hold.”

“You’re dumping me,” said Alice softly, tears welling up in her eyes.

“I wouldn’t be so harsh about it-”

“Lick my cunt you fucker,” hissed Alice, cutting him off and snapping her phone closed. That wave of nausea swept over her again and this time she couldn’t keep it down, rushing to the bathroom just in time to spill the contents of her stomach into the toilet.

Donnie walked up behind Alice and rapped his knuckles against the door to get her attention.

“You okay?” he asked gently, watching his sister wipe tears from her face.

“Fine,” said Alice hoarsely. Donnie stared at her for a minute or two and backed out of the bathroom, not completely convinced.

How could she be so stupid? Why was she even surprised? Makayla was right, Darrell was just a stupid jock who didn’t care about anything else but the next piece of ass he was getting. She ditched her friends for him, she lost her virginity to him, she was pregnant because of him. Alice closed her eyes bitterly and wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, the taste of bile still lingering in her mouth, almost making her throw up again. She didn’t want this.

Making up her mind, Alice headed for the apartment door, swiping her keys inside the stupid ceramic bowl A.J. had made in first grade and leaving quietly, careful not to wake up A.J. or to alert Donnie again.

It was cold for October. The wind burned against her skin as she walked down the New York streets. It was dangerous enough to do that during the day, but Alice didn’t care, she just needed to take a walk and forget about everything. She realized half a mile from home that she’d left her phone and (knowing Donnie) her mother would be freaking out.

Alice looked up as lights flashed against her face, blinking in the direction of the community park. It was roped off with cation tape, there was an ambulance and if she squinted hard enough Alice swore she saw a mess of curly hair walking along the edge of the crime scene.

“Stella,” first thought that crossed her mind and Alice didn’t think, just crossed the street, ignoring the lone cab that blared it horn at her. She ignored the officer that shouted at her as she ducked under the crime scene tape, heading for Stella when someone else caught her eye, making her freeze. Don was on the phone a few yards away, one hand covering his ear as he tried to listen to whomever was on the other line.

“Daddy!” Alice shouted, not thinking and running at her father who looked up, bewildered, saying a goodbye to whoever he was on the phone with and wrapping his arms around his daughter as she plowed into his chest, tears leaking out of her eyes.

“Alice, what the hell are you doing here?” asked Don softly. “You’re mom’s scared to death-”

“I’m sorry,” interrupted Alice and Don frowned. The girls in his life didn’t apologize and Alice wasn’t an exception, he pulled her away from his chest and swept his eyes over her face, making sure she wasn’t hurt.

“What are you sorry about?” he asked gently.

“I don’t wanna have a baby, Daddy,” said Alice, sniffing. “It’s not worth it-”

“Shhh,” breathed Don, pulling Alice back into his chest. “Everything’s going to be okay.”

“I don’t want it,” said Alice hysterically, choking a bit as she tried to breathe through the tears. “Can’t I get rid of it?”

“Honey, you can’t,” said Don, bracing a little. “You’re in your second trimester, it’s kind of illegal if you get an abortion now.”

“But people do it,” said Alice weakly, holding her arms loosely around Don’s chest. “What if I did it myself-”

“You could kill yourself if you did something wrong,” said Don, shaking the idea of his daughter lying dead on the bathroom floor out of his mind. “You’re going to have to live with this, Alice.”

“But-”

“No, don’t argue with me. You’re mom’s worried about you, wait here for me to finish and I’ll drive you home. ‘K?”

Alice nodded as Don pulled away from her, touching her cheek gently and heading off in the direction of Stella. Alice wrapped her arms around her waist, tucking her hair behind her ear as she waited. Someone placed their hand on her shoulder and she turned to see Stella standing behind her looking concerned.

“Alice? Sweetie, what are you doing here? It’s almost midnight,” Alice shook her head, giving Stella the same weak smile she’d seem her mother give her time after time.

“Nothing, just going for a walk.”

“Alright, Mac know where I’ll be, you can handle the scene, Stel?” said Don walking up to Stella and Alice. Stella nodded, the frown still plastered on her face.

“Flack, what’s going on?”

“What do you mean?” he asked, searching his pockets for his keys, not looking at Stella.

“Alice took a walk in the middle of the night?” asked Stella, taking a few steps away from Alice so she couldn’t over hear. “She should know better than that.”

“She’s got a lot on her mind, Stel,” said Don, looking up at Stella seriously. “Don’t look into it.”

“She’s not on drugs is she?” asked Stella, looking over at Alice, who was trying not to eavesdrop. Don laughed bitterly at the thought and shook his head.

“Then what’s going on?” asked Stella wildly, her head snapping in Alice’s direction when the girl opened her mouth.

“I’m pregnant,” Stella couldn’t control her mouth from dropping. She stared from Alice to Don, who looked slightly uncomfortable.

“Oh my god,” she whispered, shaking her head slightly. “The mayor’s boy-?”

Stella was interrupted by Don’s cell going off. He flashed Stella a pained look and answered it, his face lighting up slightly as Truly’s voice came through the other line.

“Yeah, we’re on our way now,” said Don, motioning for Alice to head to the car and patting Stella on the shoulder before he turned and followed Alice.
