Am I alone in thinking that Garbage's "Bleed Like Me" is like a less funky pale shadow of Lou Reed's "Take a Walk on the Wild Side"? Then again, I keep feeling that Trent Reznor's vocal delivery on the line "Are you hiding in the trees?" in "Right Where It Belongs" is kind of Pink Floyd-like.
I hate the way Garbage's Bleed Like Me is mixed. The vocals are half-buried, while Shirley Manson's voice and style are the major attractions of Garbage for me. NIN's With Teeth is preferable for me on headphones, since my enjoyment of it depends on the silences and gradations of volume as well as the feeling of parts of the songs bouncing through different parts of my head. On my car system it tends to flatten out.
Listening reminds me that a few people with distinctive voices in bands I've enjoyed never wanted to be the singer. Trent Reznor is one of them. Robert Smith and Andrew Eldritch are others. It's unimaginable to me, yet it's true, so....
Of course, these are also people who would no doubt get kicked off an American Idol-like show.
