Although the organization that does the Tribute in Light for 9/11 tried to cancel it due to COVID, the public outcry was so great that they ended up doing it after all (and had an unannounced trial run of it Friday of last week that I caught too). I even went down to Ground Zero tonight, but there were so many people on the streets, masked at least, and cops and illegal double parkers that I couldn't find a legal spot to park in so I just drove around. It being a Friday night didn't help. On a clear night the beams seem to go on forever vertically, and you imagine them still going out into space. I cried a bit--like I always do--but they're are always so beautiful, though one of the effects that I find so beautiful is due to birds confused by the lights flying in arcs within the beams, looking like beautiful curving sparkles or maybe souls going to heaven if you're sentimental. The lights get turned off for a little bit every so often to let the birds escape.
A lot of biker groups and gangs down there too. I was surprised by that.
It's been ridiculously hot and humid here lately, so a night of 69 degrees Fahrenheit/21 degrees Celsius was so appreciated.
