I survived another week of eye exercises, although I'm been dizzy and nauseated on and off since yesterday. The train trip both ways made survival more questionable. On my way over there was a "suspicious package" on a train at Elmhurst Ave holding up the whole line and thus the train in my own station, so I had to get on a train going in the opposite direction, get off at 71st Avenue, and pick up a different train heading into the city. I got on the F. The announcement said the V on the parallel track was leaving first and that the V was going express, it was going local, it was going express.... Confused people were getting on it, getting off it, getting on it....
I stayed on the F, which I knew would take me where I was going whichever. The V left first, but I noticed that it went local. Despite everything, I arrived at my appointment with five minutes to spare.
On the way back, there was an F train sitting at 42nd St. And sitting and sitting and.... There was an announcement about Fs traveling on the E line, which is nowhere near that station, due to an "investigation." Nothing about what the F in the station was doing or if it would leave or what the V was doing. The announcement said we could take a downtown train to the 34th St station and pick up an N, R, or W to Queens. I thought that was stupid and just went back upstairs to pick up the 7, announcing as much to the iPod woman nearby who'd been commiserating in commuting distress with me. I stayed on the 7 Express until 61st Street-Woodside, then picked up a 7 Local to get off at 74th Street-Broadway to pick up a V train to take to my home station. In subway roulette, sometimes you just have to shift your money to a different color on the wheel--this time from orange to purple--and hope you get lucky.
Follow along at home! As so often happens, I had someone ask me for train help, this time in Queens, with a guy asking which 7 was express and which local. (The express 7 has a diamond shape around the 7 and the local has a circle. The MTA finds confused passengers funny!) The 7 isn't even my usual line! It's only the line I take when everything else is screwed up.
I had to take a 7 last week after my eye exercises due to problems with the 6.
