An Adventurous Choral Production

This hasn't been my favorite piece to work on. But it will be something to be in the audience an experience it in its entirety.

Jenn and I are performing with the Brattleboro Community Chorus to present The African Sanctus by David Fanshawe. This piece, composed and collected in the late 60s and finished in the early 70s, juxtaposes traditional African folk and sacred music with Anglican and Latin liturgical mass. There are live drums. There will be live piano. There will even be a live electric guitar along with these recordings Mr. Fanshawe made back in the day from Kenya, Egypt and elsewhere. Oh, plus there are 80 of us singing. The performances are on Saturday, January 19th at 7pm and Sunday, January 20th at 3pm both at the Latchis Theatre in Brattleboro, VT. Tickets are $15. A portion of the proceeds are going to go toward some of the relief efforts in Kenya for the current wave of refugees fleeing the civil unrest there.

The piece has challenged my ethnocentrism about what I like as music. But again, it has been an adventure. And I think the end result will be pretty amazing.

I hope some of you who are more local might consider coming up to hear us. Here is the blurb and poster which is original art by one of our local painters, Carol Ross.

The Brattleboro Community Chorus is thrilled to present David Fanshawe's incredible AFRICAN SANCTUS in January at the Latchis Theater in downtown Brattleboro. There will be two performances, Saturday, January 19 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, January 20 at 3:00 p.m.
This symbolic meeting of two worlds is quite possibly the most original work in the choral repertoire of the 20th century. The SANCTUS juxtaposes a choral setting of the Latin Mass with traditional African music recorded by the composer on his journeys throughout East Africa. Music recorded on site from Egypt, Sudan, Uganda and Kenya is heard in amazing counterpoint with the chorus, soloists, multiple percussionists, piano and electric guitars. This visionary and challenging work has received international acclaim since it's premier 30 years ago. For more information on the African Sanctus see http://www.africansanctus.com/.
Tickets for the concert are available online at www.brattleborotix.com, as well as from the Brattleboro Music Center (802) 257-4523 and individual chorus members. Tickets prices are $15 adult and $10/student 18 and under.
