Madeleine L'Engle passed away yesterday, Thursday, September 6th. She was 88 years old. She didn't have any major illnesses or sufferings. It was simply her time. I have had only limited experience with her writings. I have read very few. My wife read "House Like Lotus" aloud to me, which was a beautiful experience, both being read to as well as hearing this excellent story. I have perused some of her writings about her marriage in her book "Two Part Invention: The Story of a Marriage." We had a quotation from that book in our wedding ceremony: "Love of music, of sunsets and sea; a liking for the same kind of people; political opinions that are not radically divergent; a similar stance as we look at the stars and think of the marvelous strangeness of this universe-these are what build a marriage. And it is never to be taken for granted."
Thank you, Ms. L'Engle, for all of your writings, those I have had experience of or not. I know many have loved them, been inspired by them and grown up with them. Thank you for what I have experienced of them so far. They are beautiful and speak with such a truth and authenticity to me, as well as beautiful tale-weaving. To borrow from another great writer (Ms. L. M. Montgomery), I have felt you speak as a "kindred spirit."
