Happy Halloween y Feliz Días de los Muertos

Oct 31, 2011 21:57

A very happy All Hallows' to those who celebrate it. Same goes for Samhain.

Alonso has a few significant deaths to acknowledge this year - the first anniversary of his great aunt's and great uncle's deaths, and the first Día de los Angelitos since the daughter of a good friend died from cancer early this past summer. So, we're headed down to the D.F. at a painfully early hour tomorrow to be with his family.

Until I met Alonso I knew next to nothing about Mexican holidays and religious culture. I got a crash course in wakes and funerals last year, this year it's going to be the Days of the Dead. I always thought it was just one day, November 1st, but actually the Mexican people recognize two days, corresponding to two dates in the Catholic calendar: El Día de los Angelitos on All Saints' Day (11/1) and El Día de los Muertos on All Souls' Day (11/2).

El Día de los Angelitos (the Day of the Little Angels)

is an observance for babies and children who have died.

El Día de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead)

is for adults who have died.

Alonso has been online and on the phone all day arranging for food and flowers and gifts to be sent to his parents house so they'll be ready for the start of things tomorrow.

I know I've been a less-than-stellar poster since the move up to Chicago, but I promise to get back on track when we return home this weekend. I really do miss you all.
