OK I don’t get why everyone is calling Star Trek’s treatment of Uhura misogynistic.
Sure, she was involved with one of her instructors which is a bit sketchy. But it’s made clear that she didn’t succeed because of this. She succeeded because extraordinarily talented and skilled in her chosen field. So talented, that she wasn’t particularly concerned about the appearance of her dating an instructor. She knows that she's gotten theough the Academy because she's amazing in Comm Officer's chair, not because she's good in bed. We’re also shown that she’s better at her job than the current bridge officer (as are most of the cadets, WTF?).
So why does showing that she is not only an exceptional Star Fleet Officer, but a woman unique enough arouse the passion of oh-so-logical Spock and make him throw caution to the wind constitute misogyny?
