Because I needed more fic to write, I think I've decided to do both the
Harry Potter 'Fic-a-Feast food challenge and the
X-Files Halloween Challenge. I have vague concepts for both pieces and I'm doing some research. There are two things I'm looking for, if anyone out there has any opinions and/or knowledge.
1. Food magic. Not in the Like Water For Chocolate magical realism way, but actual legends and wives tales about which foods have magic properties. For instance, the Celts believed that hazelnuts had all sorts of supernatural properties.
2. Ghost stories and urban legends. I was originally going to use a variation on the Bloody Mary story -- until I saw the preview for next week's Supernatural. Now I'm thinking something recognizable, but maybe a little more off the beaten path. So what were everyone's favorite scary stories from slumber parties, camp-outs, Halloween in the college dorm, etc.?
And, on a slightly related note...
The Geek Rock Series is still under way, but the current chapter is an absolute monster, weighing in at 60+ pages. (Ack, dude. What have I done?) In the meantime, though, here's one of my playlists for the series, complete with YSI links:
Susanne, Weezer (Susanne, you're all that I wanted of a girl / You're all that I need in the world)
Plane, Jason Mraz (You make me somebody / Ain't nobody knows me / Not even me can see it)
Sugar, We're Goin Down, Fall Out Boy (I've been dying to tell you anything you want to hear / Cause that's just who I am this week)
Get Stoned, Hinder (You wear me out / But it's all right now)
Oh, Space Mtn (Please oh please, can you help me? Please oh please, can you stay? Please oh please, will you love me? Please oh please, get away!)
Heart, Stars (All right, I can say what you want me to / All right, I can make it all up for you)
Parting Gift, Fiona Apple (I bet you could never tell / That I knew you didn't know me that well / It is my fault you see / You never learned that much from me)
They are so incredibly dysfunctional. Of course, that's why I like them in the first place. Mind you, I'm not sure that dysfunction is quite what the writers originally intended, but... every quest for the truth in the X-Files universe winds up ultimately being, in some way, All About A Woman -- which is revealing, I think.
