In the Victorian-Edwardian period, long hair was a woman's crowning glory.  Then along came the 1920s and off went the hair.  I suspect many women said, "Good riddance!"

It must have been a relief. Also a little earlier Paul Poiret revolutionized women's fashion - corsets were gone and (upperclassish) women could breathe.

And no such thing as a hair dryer. Must have been fun in winter having damp hair for hours and hours and hours and….

they could dry it in front of the fire, or put it up while wet. my hair is nearly waist length and doesn't take hours and hours to dry.

And the brushes back then weren't very great either. I think you can tell by the kinks in it she has it pulled back most of the time.
