St. Valentine's Day Massacre

Feb 14, 2008 10:28

Hello All!

Some say that the Valentine's tradition is purely commercial.

And hey it is. Commercial is such a pejorative term that is also responsible for our jobs and livelihoods.

If there is a commercial day that encourages us to be romantic and loving, well hey, I can handle it being commercial.

My criticism is much less its economic basis but the same that I level against Christmas. That is, for all those people who feel lonely and disenfranchised at this time.

As for me, I have a lovely valentine most divine, though due to certain performances this evening will be a little haphazard.

Also, my valentines present for which I've put in great thought and care (and organised some time ago) is having customs issues which delaying it by a day or three... I know that reads as a likely story... believe me though its true!!!

Happy Valentine's, to one and all.

In other news...

Western Australians are a different people. I'd be hard pressed to call them Australian's by the standards of the east coast. Different history, different culture, different identity. That and a seperation of 3000km from Perth to the nearest major city. In Europe you can go 30Km and suddenly your in a place where the people you've just left have never been, speaking a language they know nothing about.

I preface this entry such because one of the things West Australians are particularly disconnected to is what I call the 'Ned Kelly' culture. The glorifying of gangland & outlaw lifestyles. Ned Kelly for instance is a household name and national icon (just see the 2000 Olympic opening ceremony). He is famous as a highway bandit who shot police...But we forgive him because, well, he's Irish.

(Of course I don't approve of the conservative West Australian's tendency to demonize all criminals either)

The point is in NSW & Victoria in particular, being a gangster is almost a legitimate profession. Certainly you can get celebrity status, think Al Capone of the prohibition era.

Along that line there is without doubt the most infamous Australian Cop to have ever lived.

Roger Rogerson, once the most decorated police officer in the NSW police force. The movie 'Blue Murder', aside from being the best Australian Film IMO ever made, tells the story of Roger Rogerson's *ahem* colorful career to its fullest.

It seems that's all ancient history now. . Reviewing Nine's new flagship show 'Underbelly'

....
For the record, Roger Rogerson still denies any corrupt dealings. He has served several jail terms for his convictions.

Thankyou for reading my journal.
