I'm fortunate enough to not have any loans through any company that is not directly affiliated with the government, which guarentees me pretty much infinite forgiveness, but for those of you who have college loans - or any loans - through private banks, FOR GOD'S SAKE READ THIS. ( Read more... )

Well, first, let's get the things leaning against her case. Her statements seem to read that forbearance is conditional and subject to a (non-automatic) approval. These are, of course, the types of things to keep in writing, such as loan agreements, which would generally include notations on forbearance, and this is a painful lesson, but an important one. If a forbearance isn't automatic (like it is with certain conditions for Federal loans), the assumption needs to be that it won't be granted ( ... )

It was automatic approval for one year when I got my loans; you just had to fill out paperwork and send it in. My husband had no problems getting it a couple of years ago and his loans are through the same bank. The paper work I dled off of their website even still said a one year forbearance, and there is no mention ANYWHERE that you only get one forbearance EVER on a loan. They just changed it all back in May ( ... )
