As long as I'm still on the serious business

This is unrelated to the racefail 2010.

The shit that banks pull

I'm fortunate enough to not have any loans through any company that is not directly affiliated with the government, which guarentees me pretty much infinite forgiveness, but for those of you who have college loans - or any loans - through private banks, FOR GOD'S SAKE READ THIS.

Banks are falling on hard times and they are changing the rules on us here in the US of A whenever they damn well feel like it, without notice. You must inquire to find out about loan forgiveness/forbearance. Do it now.

Recently I had my bank change its rules about overdraw forgiveness, and it was a rude awakening because I received no notification of the change - not for months after the initial problem that prompted me to inquire. I'm too small a fry to do anything about this. You might find out some surprising changes made behind your back.

And if you think this doesn't effect you, think again. Right now you might be okay, but what if something happens and you lose your job/are otherwise rendered unable to pay your loans? Banks say: fuck you. Like we care.

Seriously. This is serious fucking business.

ETA: This has been brought to my attention by someone who says 'you didn't hear it from me' (said explanation has been screened):

This is regarding the bank in question, CitiBank.

That happens to be the same bank which certain department stores depend on for their credit cards. Unlike many credit card companies, there is no negotiating interest or anything: more often than not, you're just screwed. Since it's done through a department store (whose employees are "highly encouraged" to ask every customer if they would like to apply), when someone signs up for a card, they rarely know what they're getting into, especially since few people realize how radically different a department store card is vs. a regular credit card. They see "Mastercard" on it and go, "Oh, okay."

They're incredibly vicious, and they've grown worse in the last couple years. People who have had that card for the past forty years have been canceling their cards at an amazing rate. I've had multiple people insist they didn't have a card, only their spouse, but apparently Citibank would also often put it in the spouse's name, affecting both their credits (something I didn't think they could do without the spouse's consent).

Yeah. Just...don't get your card through a store. Ever.

rl, serious business
