Good news, I got off nearly an hour early. By two, my scheduled 'off' time, I had gone to the library, taken a shower, cracked the windows and turned on all the fans.
Bad news, I had to crack the windows and turn the fans on because it's, like, 89 degrees or some such shit. Worse news, I had to do all that stuff because my a/c is apparently on the fritz (I set the thermostat at 71 and it was 81 when I got home and the red 'check' light was on; it's now 84!). And it's supposed to get above 90 tomorrow, so do I really want to know how much they're gonna charge me to come out and check it out? Probably not.
Anyway, probably all my fault for the recent reminiscing about Bali...
And in a wikipedia roundup, good anniversaries include:
1320 - the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath in Scotland
1652 - founding by the Dutch of a resupply depot that becomes Cape Town, South Africa (or is that a bad one?)
1849 - John William Waterhouse (painter) was born
1896 - the first modern Olympics opens in Athens
1909 - Peary and Matthew Henson (from just down the road) reach the North Pole
1942 - Barry Levinson ('Homicide: Life on the Street,' among other things) was born
1965 - the first communications satellite is launched into geosynchronous orbit (good for cell phones, but shit on the military/security front, if you ask me)
1969 - Paul Rudd was born
1973 - introduction of the designated hitter in the American League (personally, I think that's a good thing)
1975 - Zach Braff was born!!!!
1976 - Georg Holm (Sigur Ros) was born
Bad anniversaries include:
1793 - Committee of Public Safety takes over the French Republic and starts the Reign of Terror
1917 - President Wilson declares war on Germany
1926 - Ian Paisley was born (yes, I consider that a Not Positive Thing)
1994 - Juvenal Habyarimana and Cyprien Ntaryamira, Presidents of Rwanda and Burundi, respectively, were in a plane that was shot down; Rwandan genocide begins; some of my academic/life decisions were made during this time of brutality and fear and just plain hell
And just because it's interesting, Raphael (the painter and architect) was born on this day in 1483 and died on this day in 1520.
And apparently it's Tartan Day (US and Canada, mostly). But if you missed it today, July 1st is International Tartan Day (in 'Australasia,' which I take to mean Australia and New Zealand and perhaps Hong Kong)
But this all pales in comparison to my good friend O's situation. She spends a lot of time with young cancer patients and their families, raising money, raising spirits. One of her friends just got a two-month diagnosis after having done fairly well in the past few years. So not only is a young, bright, beautiful girl dying, but one of my closest friends is in pain. And she's not here and there's nothing I can do to make it better or fix it or help her through it. And it kills me.
...And on that cheery note, I leave to take a freezing shower and eat popsicles...
