Iced Coffee Drinks and Feminism

I bought an iced capp from Tim Horton's to take to class with me today. When the woman who sits behind me saw it, she started talking about how much she likes caramel Moolattes from Dairy Queen. I have never had a Moolatte and never will. This is why: Moolatte sounds too much like moolaade, which is a South African word for female genital mutilation. You may have heard of this practice as female genital cutting which is the politically correct term. Usually, I'm all for not offending people, but I refuse to accept this horrible practice as an aspect of someone's "culture". Therefore, we will call it mutilation in this journal.

Female genital mutilation, or female circumcision, is when a woman or girl's outer genitalia (labia, clitoris) are cut off, often with a razor and without anesthesia by someone with no professional medical background. The practice mostly occurs in Africa and some middle eastern countries. The excuses for the practice are varied and range from "It's part of Islam" to "It makes a woman less likely to cheat on her husband because she no longer feels any pleasure from sex". Some also claim it is a hygienic practice.

You may say "Hey, wait a minute! We circumcise males all the time here in the US. What's the big deal?" First of all, I do not approve of male circumcision and if I ever have a son, I will not allow him to be circumcised. Second, there is a big difference between removing a tiny flap of skin in a sterile hospital setting by a doctor and slashing off a woman's vulva with a used razor by a tribal shaman so she won't enjoy sex. Many girls get HIV from the used razors and some die from complications such as blood loss or infection.

There is no excuse for female genital mutilation. I feel like it is akin to Christians burning witches. It's an atrocity that people try to excuse by saying that God told them to do it.

Ok,

Anyway, I will not buy any Moolattes until Dairy Queen changes their name to something less disgusting.
