A New Job (Kinda) and a Rare but Pleasant Occurence!

It's been awhile since I actually posted anything resembling a journal entry about the day-to-day goings-on of my life...so I thought I'd just start now, and hopefully make it a more regular thing ( Read more... )

Combat! is great!:)

I'm also a HUGE fan of the 1960s tv show The Rat Patrol, which, while slightly inaccurate (the desert rats were British, not a mix of Americans and British as in the show),is still amazing. All the Germans actually speak unsubtitled German, too.:D

I LOVE "The Rat Patrol"! My dad had gotten that on dvd several years ago and when I watched it, I fell in love with it (I love the North African theatre and it's hard finding good movies about it!). My favourite character is Hauptmann Dietrich. :D I love the fact that a lot of the German is unsubtitled, which makes this German-language student have some fun. :D

Awesome! I started watching it last year,I love it.:D

I really like how Dietrich isn't just a one-dimention enemy but rather a really complex character.
My favorite is Hitch.:D

I know like 3 words of German so my grandmother translates most of it for me.:P Thats how I get her to watch it,since she doesn't like the show.:P

I completely agree! That's why I really like him! It shows that not all Germans were idiots and that they weren't all "Nazis". He was a dedicated soldier who did his job, though there were times it was clear that he didn't approve of what was going on. There were times though that he just wasn't smart.

Hee, I figured as much from your icon! :D Aww, I'm sorry your grandma doesn't like the show but at least you get to know what is being said! I love how Hochstetter is in an episode of "The Rat Patrol" playing in the opposite army.

Yes,I really liked that too. Very realistic.

I must admit my reasons for loving Hitch probably has a lot to do with the fact I think he's completely adorable.:D Lawrence Casey guest starred in one of my very favorite episodes of Gunsmoke,so I've loved him for years.:D

Haha, she finds it difficult to follow. But she doesn't quite get why I find WWII so facinating so that may be part of it.;)

Really? Wow,I don't remember him! Maybe the absense of a German accent threw me off.:P

I searched "Rat Patrol" & happened upon this thread. I also love RP & my favourite character is also the captain. And ifavorfire is right; Dietrich isn't some "one-dimensional" character & isn't some stereotypical Nazi type. Thankfully, this was due to Hans Gudegast (AKA Eric Braeden) changing the character from the way it was originally written (a stereotypical Nazi with an eye patch & limp), to an honourable "Rommel-esque" soldier. I don't think Captain D did the Nazi salute even one time in the show. I only wish there was more fic out there for RP, but especially centering on the captain. My second favourite character was Hitch, then Moffitt, but I like them all! Nice to see there are other fans out there. And I love HH too. If you don't know about them, there are some great Yahoo groups for both HH & RP.

I've actually written quite a bit of fanfic revolving around said favourite Hauptmann. :D I just wrote it in my personal journal and never put it on the computer. I'm glad that Eric Braeden changed the character to be more human. Dietrich really did show the honour of the German soldiers during the war, especially North Africa. I was surprised at how quickly I took to his character.

Blah, this whole conversation has made me want to not only make some new icons but also to watch the whole series again! But that's fine, I just finished "Doctor Who" so I feel a need for the classics! :D

I hope you decide one day to put your RP stories on LJ or some other format where RP fans can read it! There is so little RP fic available, & captain fic would especially be popular. I know other fans on the RP Yahoo sites I belong are always wishing for (or begging!) new fic. You really should post it some day! I love my RP DVDs! I'd actually forgotten about RP & the captain, until I happened upon the season 1 DVDs a couple years ago, & it brought back such great memories, & more, how surprised I was that at my age I still had a huge crush on the captain! (I actually discovered RP in the 70s when it was run on late night TBS.) I also like Dr Who, that is, the new one, but haven't yet purchased the DVDs. How about a Dr Who/RP crossover!? Jen C

I'd feel so silly posting them. I'd probably be happier writing something new rather than trying to put some of those old stories up. I know that the father of my German Luftwaffe Major was inspired by Dietrich... so somewhere in my stories I wound up changing tunes entirely... so I honestly don't think they should get posted... do you guys care about drabbles/droubbles? I'm good at writing those when I'm testing out the waters of a new/old fandom ( ... )

It's up to you of course, but I'd still love to see the stories. Of course, if it was done when you were younger & not quite as experienced as a writer, they could always be updated & edited. As for drabbles, I love them, although ideally I'd love to see a really long story. But, drabbles are great, as are "missing scenes", "alternative endings" & "sequels" to the too short original episodes. So, I say GO FOR IT! And, if you haven't read the RP fic already available here on LJ, you should do so. I think you'd enjoy it. Jen C

It wouldn't be lack of experience as a writer... because I've been writing all my life, it's more like I just don't feel like sharing them with anyone. I'm still quite unhappy with the conclusion of the second season of RP because we just don't know what happened to our favourite Hauptmann. :(

I've read a couple of the fics on FF.net but since my comp has decided to start hating that site, I don't visit it often. I've been so busy lately writing and reading books for research I haven't really had much time to invest in reading fanfic other than the ones that I am asked to read. So if you have any recs, let me know.

I don't go for slash or stuff that involves sex, just saying. :) I'm a WWII buff who loves the European theatre as well as the North African campaign. My interest for the South Pacific extends as far as the Windtalkers and the Corsairs of Black Sheep Squadron, the P-40s, and that's it...

The one and only! I love the old military/war tv shows and Black Sheep Squadron was one of those that I also instantly fell in love with. "McHale's Navy" took a lot for me to warm up to but all the love I had for it died with the fourth series. But yes, I love Black Sheep Squadron! My favourite episode was when the WASPs stayed at the base.

AWESOME.:D

Oh me too..I loved war films all my life but only got into the tv shows last year. Can't get enough of them now.:D

I've only seen about 5-6 episodes of the first season of McHale's Navy, not enough to tell whether I really liked it or not. I may pick it up sometime...
Out of curiosity, what happened in the fourth series?

There are some episodes of McHale's Navy that just drag on. There are a few though that just made me laugh so hard. One of the episodes got me hooked to the song, "Hut-Sut Rawlson on the Rillerah" and it has appeared numerous times in various stories of mine. In fact, I gave it to my young, 1950s junior detective, who uses it as a code for "Detective in trouble!"

"McHale's Navy" is slapstick humour when Americans could do it right. I could only take so much of it though before it got old. When they went to Italy, I thought it would be awesome. But I wound up hating most of the series and was thankful that there wasn't anymore.

That's when we got back into "Adam 12" and "Emergency".
