I left for my mother's on Tuesday afternoon and got back into town this morning. The time there was very relaxing, especially since we could sit outside where the air was even slightly moving in the middle of this heatwave. Finland has been record hot this summer with temperatures around 30˚C or above. Which is pretty hot (I say TOO HOT). It doesn't help that most houses are well insulated to withstand the cold, but don't usually have air-conditioning.

Still, about my visit to my mom's, my younger sister and her family (=husband, two children, and two gerbils) were there as well. The kids were running around as usual, but they have been well-brought-up and know how to behave. Eemeli was adorable when he was saying to his big sister that he's going to play with Tarja now since I'm his godmother. My sister remarked that this was the first time he used this oneupmanship card with his sister :).

It was hilarious to watch my mother's cat around the gerbil cage, since it wanted to get it, but the glass was on the way. It kept meowing and circling the cage for a while trying to get in until it gave up. Even after that, it was mostly staying in the room with the cage and keeping an eye on it, just in case.

Yesterday we had my youngest sister's (I have two younger sisters, for clarification) birthday party. My middle-sister, her husband and I arranged the tables and chairs etc. in the garden and prepared the food. There was some minor excitement when my brother-in-law suddenly got a call a little before the party from their mutual friend that someone had found my sister's mobile phone. My sister hadn't even noticed it was missing before that, and later commented that she probably would have blamed the kids for playing with it if it hadn't been found.

She had put it on the hood of my mother's car and when my mother went to the footsore to pick up some last minute things, it had dropped off. Apparently some old lady had found it and had taken it to the village police. Well, long story short, my sister went to the police station and got her phone back.

The party itself was fine, though it started raining at some point. Luckily we had already eaten and there was only the cake left, so it was easy to move things inside.

All in all, these few days were very much fun, relaxing though with lots of things to do as well.

Now my bags are packed again and tomorrow it's time to head to Jyväskylä in the middle of Finland for Finncon, the Finnish national SF con.
