Sharaabi & Katharine Kerr

Sharaabi
Another great role by Amitabh Bachchan. This film tells about Amitabh's character's alcoholism, which has originally been caused by his rich father's neglect. He has been brought up by a devoted servant, a former friend of his father's, but he still yearns to make his own mark. Throughout his live he has been generous with his wealth and has helped poor people, but has never thought that much about it.

When he falls in love with a poor singer and his father disinherits him, it's his poor acquaintances that save him. This movie was ok, but Amitabh-ji's performance was excellent. I need to see still more old Amitabh movies!!! He has been very good in all of the ones I've seen. It was very easy to go to the rental store and to say "I want a good older Amitabh movie, but I've seen Don, Sholay, Deewaar, Amar Akbar Anthony, etc". :)

Katharine Kerr and her SF novels
Kerr is mostly known for her Deverry fantasy series, but she has also written several sf novels as well. The Deverry books are ok, but I've also quite liked her sf novels. Polar City Blues (1990) was a nice detective sf about a human Republic caught between two alien powers. The inhabitants of the city's underworld are called to assist the authorities when the death of a diplomat and the possibility of first contact with a previously unknown species heighten the tention in the city.

I'm just starting to read Polar City Nightmare (2000, written with Kate Daniel) which is set in the same world and probably with at least a few of the same characters.

Resurrection (1991) was a very interesting story about a female fighter pilot who had apparently been blasted into a parallel world after a major accident in which she was badly injured. This story was later made a part of a novel called Freezeframes (1994), but IMO, it was too disjointed to work as an integrated story.
