Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna

I finally saw this film today and I liked it. When I rated it at IMDB, it was quite amusing to notice that most people had given it either a 10 or a 1. I don't think it was perfect film - it dragged a bit at times - but I don't think it was that bad either.

Here are some jumbled thoughts on the film:

Karan Johar has clearly moved on from the teenage romances into more mature subjects. This story of relationships involves two couples whose marriages aren't working and tells what happens when two of the people meet each other and fall in love.

Dev (Shahrukh Khan) is a rather bitter, angry man whose wife Rhea (Preity Zinta) is a highly successful career woman. Dev used to play professional football (soccer), but an accident cripples his leg and now he walks with a permanent limp. Maya (Rani Mukherji) married her childhood friend Rishi (Abhishek Bachchan), but finds out that friendship isn't enough basis for a marriage.

After a chance meeting, Dev and Maya start meeting each other to gripe about their marriages and spouses, and gradually they become friends and fall in love with each other. And in the end, have an extra-marital affair. The affair destroys both marriages, but Iife goes on, and in the end they do get together. Still, they had a separation of almost three years before that happened.

Though I have to say that I didn't quite buy Rishi and Rhea's magnanimous gesture at the end, when they tell Rhea that Dev is at the train station and that he's no longer married to Rhea. It felt out of character.

I think all the leads did a good job in their roles. I also liked Amitabh Bachchan as Rishi's father who is a bit of a playboy, but also has a deep and loving friendship with Dev's mother, played by Kiron Kher.

My favourite songs of KANK are "Mitwa" and "Rock'n'roll Soniye", but my favourite picturisation was for "Tumhi Dekho Naa". I loved all the changing colours in it and the autumny yellow leaves and the gorgeous burnt orange saree Rani was wearing at one point. The song that I didn't like that much was "Where's the Party Tonight".

I really enjoyed the brief cameos by Kajol and John Abraham. Arjun Rampal's special appearance as Rhea's boss was also fun.
