I wanted to write about the most expensive Indian movies ever made. For a minute, lets set aside inflation and lets look at the raw cost of the movie. Lets do the hindi movies first. I have not updated myself on this. But so far, this is what I know ( Read more... )

Well, perhaps including the profit statistics would make this a more interesting read... well, anyway, I am not a fan of either, but, I certainly am a worshiper of good and great movies, irrespective of its land of origin.

Anyway, both the above clips look like having been taken off Mr. Bendaras's Desperado, a movie far less expensive but with a far more appeal-factor for me :-D

I wanted to put in the profits. But the numbers are pretty controversial. The profits of sivaji are said to range from 100-300 crores. Profits of Jodha Akbar are so controversial that we dont even know if the movie made money. Most estimates are about 10-20 crores. Ofcourse this is pretty low because the movie was released in limited screens. Its pretty hard to find a true number, after all most producers dont release the number.

I can see you have a slight bias to hindi movies, or a slight aversion to south indian movies, and thats alright. after all, an average hindi movie costs more and makes more than an average tamil movie. Its just movies by superstar and kamal hassan that cost crazy amounts of money and bring in truckloads.

Can you give me the youtube link of the desperado song?

You are wrong, I am not biased at all, I dislike both the above clips :-D
Desperado had no song and dance sequence, but you can't deny the concept having been lifted off from there, look at the heroin's costume she is dressed almost identical to salma hayek and the hero acting out the guitar-player+biker image.

pssst, dont know if you knew this. But considering inflation, desparado was probably far more expensive to make that sivaji or golmaal returns!

wikipedia says the movie budget was 7 million $ , I understand very little of inflation but by layman's calculation - the max dollar cost around mid 90s was 50 rs and by that a western for 35 crore rs was/is small budget...I might be wrong in perceiving all this right *sigh*

... what is superstar signature? I dont understand.

dint realize the movie was made in 1995. But the inflation from 1995-2008 is close to 40%. So a $7 million movie would be more $10 million now, which is about 50 crores. Almost comparable to high budget movies. but then again, a $10 million movie isnt a high budget movie for hollywood. But in the 95's, desparado was definitely bigger than your average movie ( ... )
