No, perhaps not - but they were most certainly deists, and most likely those beliefs were based in a Christian or Catholic background. You would have been hard-pressed to find people who did not believe in some form of afterlife or god during that time period, and especially in this country's baby years.

Having said that, as you may well know. I am a practicing Buddhist. Belief in a man in the sky does not appeal to me, but pulling myself up by my own bootstraps when things get shitty - instead of praying/wishing that things would get better - and relying on myself to accomplish my own goals - instead of thanking "God" when things go properly - DOES, quite, appeal to me, and always has. It's just that now I know it by another name - karma, the law of cause and effect.

I don't begrudge anyone their religion, so long as it does not harm anyone physically or do any mental damage. Unfortunately, I fear that a lot of mental dependence on "God" has caused this country to lose the very mind it could be using to set itself free. I could go on, but I won't. :)
