Nationwide Building Society have started a new advertising campaign using Messrs. Walliams and Lucas reprising their Little Britain "I'm a Laydee" characters.
I’ve noticed that both on Facebook and in online trans forums (such as UK Angels) that it’s generated a big response. Quite a few trans women feel offended by the adverts and there is also concern as the phrase has been used widely as a term of abuse against people with my condition in the street and against trans children in schools, in fact it is possibly the most widely used form of abuse against trans-girls.
Its unfortunate that transgenderism/transsexualism is viewed within society as a condition that is open to ridicule and abuse. As it is, Nationwide’s adverts can be perhaps seen as being misguided as they do not help overcome the prejudice that exists.
This is precisely why I believe that we need to raise awareness of trans issues and the problems that inflict persons that suffer from the condition. In this way we can treat the problems that cause the social abuse in the first place, very often brought about because people may be uninformed or ill-informed.
Finally, for what its worth, Nationwide are to the best of my knowledge a supportive and respectful organization. I have it on good authority that they treat everyone who transitions as if they have a GRC as soon as they are advised of transition starting. This has meant implementing important changes to their systems as previously it was impossible to change or hide details on closed accounts.
