Entering the 21st Century

For years I have refused to get a cell phone, didn't see the point of it.  If anybody really wanted to call me, they could call me on my home phone.  I have no need, I insisted, on being available to everybody all the time, and flatly refuse to accomomdate other people apparent need to have me at their disposal in that way.

Well, I had a cell phone when Roy was alive, but only untill  he passed away, and only because, he insisted I have one of his so he could get in touch with me.  Since he was paying for it, I didn't turn down the free security.  However, once he died, those phones went away and I would have had to get one on my own.

Sooooo, years later, I am just now getting a cell phone.  Yes, you read that right, I am getting one.  Partly this is due to the fact that in my house, the only access to the landline is in a place where I seldom am...at least at night late.  Maybe concern about my own health, since I am getting a bit older, impacted me.  In addition, people at work were threatening to buy me a pre-paid phone and drag me into the 21st century that way.

All of this was just the tipping point, because I had been thinking about making a political statement by getting a phone thru Credo, a progressive company that contributes a certain portion of its revenue to progressive causes such as solar power (there is a petition on their site urging the President to install such on the White House as they say Obama indicated some time ago that he was willing to do, but still hasn't at this point).  Today when I got my phone via ups, they had an envelope for return if I should choose to do so, that was biodigradable.

So the political issues, combined with the safety and increased access to communication, finally convinced me.  BTW, I should have unlimited data also...so I might even use my phone as a sub-computer....

A win win, as it is allowing me to support causes I believe in, and also help myself.

cell phones, politics
