The only downsides to scotch tape are that it can wear off after a while, and it can take the paint with it... I reccomend sticky tac.

I am a dork.

Scotch tape works well for photos, postcards and the like. For heavier things, I am a fan of thumbtacks. Sometimes, however, you have cinderblock walls, in which case duct tape has always worked the best for me. Freshman year, I had cinderblock walls that were painted white. I thought it would be awful, but as long as they have enough paint that you can't touch them and feel the cinderblock texture, they're kind of nice.
Have fun at college! It's sometimes a little scary at first, but freshman orientation is really helpful for that, and within a week, you'll be feeling like you've been doing the whole college thing forever.

scotch tape works okay. for heavier posters, you may want to try various kinds of double-sided mounting tape, which holds weight better. the disadvantage of this is that it sometimes tears the backs of posters when it's removed from them. one strategy that sometimes works is to first put clear packing tape over the relevant spots on the backs of the posters, so that the mounting tape then affixes to the smooth surface of the packing tape, and the mounting tape in turn attaches to the wall. Swarthmore has some official rules about getting mounting tape that doesn't damage the paint, but as long as you don't do really egregious damage this is unlikely to be a problem. nevertheless, if you're concerned, the black foam adhesive mounting squares from 3M are known to do relatively little paint damage.

i had a huge fight with one of my posters...it was a four foot by three foot heavy paper rendition of starry night. needless to say, it was heavy. however, after having it fall on me at the most inopportune times (aka while sleeping as it was over my bed) and after using sticky tack, double sided tape, *and* scotch tape... all at the same time....all around the entire poster....i found the solution: there are these hooks that you put on the wall that you can remove because you "stretch" out the tape/foam holding them to the wall...supposed to leave no mark...fascinating stuff...but anyhoo, i bought some hooks for my wall (extremely cheap and good solution for the hanging problem) and used the extra tape strips for my poster. it stayed up for the rest of my six months there ( ... )
