Our friends Ivan, Jeanne, and Frances

Living in the South East means you make new friends all through the summer and fall. They tend to be quite fickle, but it's really intense while it lasts. Ivan's getting close - he seems to be favouring Alabama. Jeanne's a bit further out so we're not really sure where she's headed. There's another one coming? This surely must be some kind of record! So many in suck quick succession and also going inland for some distance.

The number of landfalls may be a bit higher than usual, and the number of hurricanes per year is probably increasing a bit, but it's not record territory by any means. Better yet, the meteorologists think we're entering a period of "increased hurricane activity." When they were asked for how long, they said something like "maybe 20 to 100 years." They don't know. It's now officially a bad thing to live in Florida.

The only problem with the second floor is that you miss the flood, but if the hurricane spawns a tornado, and the tornado drops a volvo on your rooftop, it doesn't really matter if you're flooding because the rain is gonna get you through the roof then. ;-)
