Living in the South East means you make new friends all through the summer and fall. They tend to be quite fickle, but it's really intense while it lasts. Ivan's getting close - he seems to be favouring Alabama. Jeanne's a bit further out so we're not really sure where she's headed. The east coasts of Florida and Georgia are looking likely right now.
They "retire" a hurricane name if it becomes infamous enough. Think of Hugo and the devastation he did in Charleston in 1989. It doesn't seem right that there should be another Hugo, does it? But six years from now there'll be another Ivan unless he totally wipes out a major city (who knows, he may manage it). They only get a name when they reach a certain wind speed ...
Frances was our closest friend so far this season. She beat the shit out of Florida and then headed up into Georgia, dumping several inches of water on us. I'm told that winds around here reached 60 mph. That's enough for me - I'm glad that this building is so solid and I'm on the second floor (flood watches for Thursday - friend Ivan is coming).
