Went to Chicago Monday night. Came back this morning. Spent yesterday sorting through housing troubles and talking about my schedule with the joint programs advisor, since I have to somehow squeeze in all my extra business classes along with my regular Medill requirements. (I think only two people are in my specific program. Including me.)
We talked for two hours and got a bit distracted talking about the Global program, even though that will be my last quarter after all of my business classes are over and there will be plenty of time later to figure out where we're going to send me. But just for fun I was looking through all the possibilities. I had thought you needed to speak the language for all of the programs, but it turns out you don't. Germany, yes. France, yes. Anywhere Spanish speaking, yes. Prague, not so much. Cambodia - not at all. So I could totally do my quarter abroad in Cambodia. I probably won't; I'll probably still go somewhere Spanish-speaking, but it was fun to contemplate new options. (Cuz, you know, I don't have enough of those.)
Unfortunately, it looks like Israel will not be an option. My school does have partnerships with several news agencies in Jerusalem, but in the past couple of years, they've all developed a new policy of only taking Jewish interns. For security reasons.
Tell me where else in the Western world an organization could get away with that and still be considered respectable.
