Superstition has always been something that’s both fascinated and scared me at the same time. It’s kinda like the feeling you get when you stare at someone sticking their head into a Lion’s mouth. You know that it’s been done before, but you’re worried this time he mightn’t be so lucky, and you’d be confronted with a bleeding stump of a neck to look at for amusement.
Thing is, I've grown up in a household which enjoys horror-related things ... or well Mum does, and my bros and I don’t.
Everyday I go for a bike ride on this long track that winds behind people’s houses and is on the edge of a creek. I usually go at about 5pm or so, but seeing as I got home a bit late today ... I ended up going at about 5:20 or thereabouts. The track’s about 2-3km in total and part of it winds through this seemingly pointless copse of trees. During the day it’s as peaceful as anything - you wouldn’t think it scary or anything, and anyone who told you so would’ve been an object of ridicule.
Now riding thru it at night is a totally different story.
On my way home, it started going dark incredibly quickly. By the time I’d hit the bit that went thru the trees, the only source of light ended up coming from the moon. Right before I went into it, all these thoughts just hit home straight away. You think back to all those horror movies and stories you’ve watched and remembered how at some point there was always something involving a rather foolish person entering a dark place and vanishing from sight. Conveniently I had to JUST think of that ... the setting was rather fitting too.
The moment I pushed the pedals and rode on ... that clichéd feeling of passing through something invisible and cold suddenly hit. Your senses start going into hyper-sensitive mode and all a sudden it seems like you’re definitely not alone.
Although I was riding incredibly quickly, I suddenly caught this odd sound. It definitely wasn’t coming from me or the bike ... but it sounded as though someone was taking very quick and heavy footsteps down the sloped path I was riding on. Definitely sounded like it ... yet on inspection, surprise surprise, nothing there ... and the sound had stopped.
Thing is, whenever I excercise, I don’t wear my glasses ... but I can see enough to note that I couldn’t see anything aside from the trees. Yet in all seriousness, I’ve seen two flower wreaths hanging on nearby trees in that clump - the type that you bind around the trunk to symbolise the last place a person had been before something horrible had happened to themselves. Haha, with that in mind, I started imagining things like bodies hanging on tree branches and dark shapes flicking in and out of the trees.
You guys should come over some day! I’ll take you walking along that path. It’s not that bad actually - unless you’re alone in the dark.
Time for me to get back to work! Just thought I'd share that with you all haha. Just got another new puppy and it keeps crying! Study well guys! Nearly breaktime!
