"I hold that, the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man"
-Gandhi-
Besides the usual Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, and Einstein, I have a new hero: Ingrid Newkirk.
"It is totally unconscionable to subject defenseless animals to mutilation and death, just so a company can be the first to market a new shade of nail polish or a new, improved laundry detergent... It's cruel, it's brutal, it's inhumane, and most people don't want it."
-Abigail "Dear Abby" Van Buren, testifying before the House Judiciary Committee in support of the Consumer Products Safe Testing Act, March 1988
Solution to Animal Testing:
*Write or call companies (eg. L'Oreal and Proctor and Gamble) to let them know that you will not be purchasing their products until they stop maiming animals in their product tests.
*Inform others. Most people aren't aware that their "cherry red" depends on animals suffering
*Go cruelty-free. Circulate a community petition. There are lists of companies which do and do not use animal products, and places like the Body Shop, Paul Mitchell, Revlon, Avon, and Aveda have taken pledges they do not test on animals but use in vitro stuides with computer models, and on human skin (cloned or attached to volunteers) which is must safer and more reliable testing anyway.
Clean Up for the Animals:
*The average American produces 1,300 pounds of trash a year. There are almost 300 million Americans...
*Approximately 14 billion pounds of trash are dumped into the sea every year
"Live simply so that others may simply live".
*Avoid buying unnecessary plastic products. Buy juice in cardboard cartons, use wax paper instead of plastic wrap
*Crush the open end of cans as flat as possible
*Carry your own string or canvas bags to the grocery store (cotton string bags are available from Seventh Generation) or at least use paper bags over plastic. In the kitchen, use only biodegradable or photodegradable food storage bags
*Clean beaches!
*Never launch helium balloons. When the baloons land, particularly in the water
"We cannot glimpse the essential life of a caged animal, only the shadow of [her] former beauty."
-Julia Allen Field, "Reflections on the Death of an Elephant"
