Calculus Hilarity

well, since we're talking about comics...

today in Honors Calculus, i was preparing them for a derivative quiz they're taking tomorrow. so i tossed up on the board an all-encompassing function. it included EVERYTHING they needed to know about taking derivatives: trig function, natural log, an exponential, the Power Rule, Product Rule, Sum / Difference Rule, Quotient Rule (lo-deehi, hi-deelo!), Chain Rule, Constant Rule, Constant Multiple Rule, Kitchen Sink Rule. so i said "go ahead, try deriving that mess!" and one of the kids, Bray, said "i bet it's 3. is it 3?" i said..."no".

so as the kids were working on the problem, ti was inspired mto go back to my issued tablet PC and dig up the following Sidney Harris cartoon, which is one of my favorites.

i then brought the comic up to show everybody, since it related to Bray's comment. and many of them...sort of got the joke. a lot of those kids completely missed the idea though....asking "wait, is that right?" or "that really equals 6?"

*smacks self*

oh well...they still mostly understand the Calc stuff, even if they don't get Sidney Harris. i may still show them this one though, because it's easily his most famous, and EVERYBODY understands and empathizes.
